Baccalaureate Set for Friday

The Baccalaureate, an annual Commencement Weekend tradition featuring music and addresses by graduating students reflecting on their four years at WPI, will be held Friday, May 10, in Alden Memorial at 5:30 p.m.

The program is open to all graduates, parents, and the campus community and is followed by a reception in the Campus Center Odeum.

The entire event is planned by graduating seniors who are members of the Senior Class Board of Directors and the Baccalaureate Committee, says James McLaughlin, assistant dean of student programs and director of the Campus Center.

“The purpose of the program is to allow our seniors, their families, and the WPI community to pause and reflect about the undergraduate educational experience that will be coming to an end with Commencement,” he says.

McLaughlin explains that at the Baccalaureate, seniors are challenged by their fellow students and a guest inspirational speaker (this year, Dorothea Wong ’92) to think about the opportunities and challenges they will face as they begin a new chapter after Commencement. Musical performances by members of the Class of 2013 are also part of the program.

Friday’s student speakers are Ilea Graedel and Gabriela Nunez. Musicians performing at Baccalaureate are pianist John Dias, soloist Chelsea Ross Miller, the WPI Brass Ensemble, and the Senior A Cappella Quartet.

The Reverend Tomasz Borkowski of WPI’s Collegiate Religious Center will deliver the invocation, and Rabbi Irving Luchans, chaplain of SolAmor Hospice, will give the benediction.
